Putting on belly fat is a problem for many men, Ealing Chiropractor, Johan Jeronimus of Neuroworks Chiropractic points out it that this problem may creep up on us because of hectic, stressful lives in busy but sedentary jobs that leave us too mentally tired and exhausted to do much after a long day at work. Ordering a takeaway and opening a nice bottle of wine is the option that most of us would choose rather than heading for the gym.
He draws our attention to the theme for Men's Health Week this year which is aimed at focussing our attention to the fact that excess belly fat could be hazardous to our health - not because of the under the skin fat but because of the deeper, visceral fat that wraps itself round heart, liver and other major organs.
This visceral fat increases the risk of sleep apnoea, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and raised blood pressure. It also increases the potential risk for some cancers including colorectal cancer and causes problems for men, with getting and maintaining an erection. In fact, carrying too much belly fat can increase your chances of dying prematurely from any cause.
These health risks are all reasons to take action to trim your waistline and improve your health generally. Johan has compiled some tips and suggestions that will really make a difference!

First, Improve Your Nutrition
- Reduce your consumption of saturate fats and include more lean protein in your diet
- Cut down on packaged and processed foods and read pack labels carefully. Avoid products containing trans fats and added sugars wherever possible
- Watch your portion control; choose a smaller plate as an easy way to cut down your meal size.
- Eat more fruit and veg. Use these as healthy, between-meal snacks, and to fill you up at meal times.
- Eat more of the 'healthy' fats found in avocados, tree nuts and oily fish.
- Keep your digestive transit healthy with sufficient insoluble and soluble fibre but ensure that you also drink plenty of water to avoid constipation.
- If you are concerned that your diet may not be meeting your nutritional needs, speak to your Ealing Chiropractor who can help and give advice on adding any supplements that might be helpful in your case.
Be More Active, Every Day!
All of us can start out with good intentions when it comes to exercising - but enthusiasm can soon 'fizzle out' - so here are some useful tips from your Ealing chiropractor to keep you motivated and reach your goals.
- Firstly, if you have not exercised for a while - and definitely if you are over 40, go and see your GP before you begin. Getting checked out can rule out any health problems that might be a risk factor and, if you already have a health problem, advice on how to begin safely, can be invaluable.
- Secondly, Johan suggests a 'wellness' check from your Chiropractor. Even if you do not think you have a problem, Chiropractors can pick up any biomechanical or postural problems that may have crept up over time. Many of these problems respond well to Chiropractic adjustments that can help us to move better and increase our levels of physical activity.
- Thirdly, when deciding on an exercise plan, choose activities and exercises that you enjoy and will want to keep on doing. Don't set yourself unrealistic fitness goals as this will only discourage you. Exercise with a friend so you can encourage each other, join an exercise class, cycling or walking club or group to enjoy the social aspects of exercising as well. Think of ways you can add physical activity to your day. Simple things like climbing stairs not taking the lift, adding some walking during your working day or, some gardening or other activity at the weekend, will all add up over time.
